Topic description

The topic provides an understanding of contemporary population trends in the developed and developing worlds, paying particular attention to policy issues. Where appropriate, discussions of demographic concepts and methods and their application to population issues are included.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide an understanding of contemporary population trends in the developed and developing worlds, paying particular attention to policy issues
  • Focus on important aspects of demographic theory and methods and contemporary demographic problems, including population-environment issues
  • Introduce various theories of population change, followed by discussions of selected aspects of the three components of population change (fertility, mortality, and migration) and reproductive health
  • Encourage students, where appropriate, to evaluate how population dynamics will impact on the environment and on issues relevant to environmental management
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Describe the major population trends (including trends in fertility, mortality, migration and population ageing) and population issues of concern to policy makers in developed and developing countries
  2. Describe the demographic transitions of developed and developing countries
  3. Describe the linkages of population growth and population composition changes with the natural environment, health and welfare of human populations
