Topic description
This topic introduces the theory and practice of traffic engineering including road and rail infrastructure. Topics to be covered include traffic flow theory; theories of interrupted & area-wide traffic flow; traffic surveys & data collection/analysis methods; performance/design of intersections & roundabouts; traffic signal operation/design; transport & the environment; planning & design for public transport systems; transit oriented development and smart growth; pedestrian and bicycle networks; road safety; urban transport planning; traffic operations; traffic impact analysis; travel-demand forecasting and basic road design variables; Intelligent Transport Systems; transport network modelling.
Educational aims
All civil engineers must understand the issues and solutions pertaining to the efficient development of transport infrastructure of all forms. The aim of this topic is to present an introduction to transport system components, theories, design and operation of different system elements for different modes of transport.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:
