Topic description

This topic introduces theoretical and practical elements of hydraulics and water engineering, including the sustainable utilization, treatment and management of water for the benefit of society and the environment. Topics include pipe flow, dam design, pumps, turbines, hydropower, computational techniques, flow measurement, river channel behaviour and erosion, water and wastewater treatment, water supply infrastructure, irrigation and drainage, water pollution and water resources management.

Educational aims

Civil engineers should have a sound understanding of hydrology, hydraulics and fluid mechanics, water and wastewater treatment technology, water chemistry and water resources planning and management, including both conceptual processes and mathematical representation. The aim of this topic is to present an introduction to the underlying principles of water engineering, and practical problem-solving techniques applied to contemporary issues in water delivery, treatment, natural system processes and water resources infrastructure and management.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply theoretical concepts of fluid mechanics and hydraulics to water infrastructure design and operation
  2. Understand the concepts of water and wastewater treatment, and apply these to the design of treatment facilities
  3. Appreciate the processes relevant to problems of flooding and erosion, and develop engineering measures for mitigation
  4. Develop water balance estimates for catchments, and apply concepts of hydrology to the estimation of catchment runoff for the purposes of water resources and flooding infrastructure design
  5. Develop informed planning and management strategies for the sustainable use of water resources
  6. Report on best practices in Water Sensitive Urban Design
