Fluid Mechanics: Fluid properties; Hydrostatics; One dimensional flow of incompressible fluids; Continuity, momentum and energy equations; Laminar and turbulent flows in pipes, ducts and open channels; Dimensional analysis, flow measurements and fluid machinery. Thermodynamics: Basic thermodynamic concepts; properties of ideal gases and vapours; the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics. Thermodynamic cycles and efficiency. Heat Transfer: Introduction to conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer; Thermal insulation; Heat Exchangers.
This topic aims to ensure that the students understand the following:
Modelling the flows of fluids
Measurements of the flows of fluids
Heat transferred to and from a fluid
First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics
Thermodynamic cycles and their efficiency
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:
Understand the basic properties of gases and liquids
Write the relevant equations of motion for fluids
Understand the basics of heat transfer
Understand the implications of the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics
Solve simple flow problems
Understand how flow measurements are done in practice
Determine the efficiencies of various thermodynamic cycles
