Topic description
Introduction; design process; materials and their properties; materials property charts; materials selection (strategies, procedures and case studies); processes selection and case studies; multiple constraints and objective with their case studies; designing hybrid materials and their case studies; materials and environment; materials and industrial design.
Educational aims
Materials and processes are developing fast and this presents more challenges and opportunities than ever before. This topic aims to provide students with an understanding of the role of materials and their processing in mechanical design of components and devices; and a strategy for managing the challenges and using the opportunities
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the role of materials and their processing in mechanical designs
  2. Analyse materials and processes selection problems in design applications
  3. Apply constraints, technical and environmental aspects involved in selection of materials in mechanical design
  4. Use several case studies for materials and processes selection for similar cases and applications
