Fundamentals of power systems, line constant calculations, capacitance of transmission lines, performance of lines, high voltage DC transmission, corona,mechanical design of transmission lines, overhead line insulators, voltage control,neutral grounding, transients in power systems, symmetrical components and fault calculations, protective relays, circuit breakers, insulation coordination and overvoltage protection, power system synchronous stability, load flow, economic load dispatch, load frequency control, compensation in power system and power system voltage stability.
The educational aims of the topic are:
To develop knowledge of the fundamental principles related to electrical power systems construction, design, stability and control
To enhance understanding of the different aspects of power system analysis and protection within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental elements of transmission line modelling, quality of electrical power supply, electrical protection systems and power system control
Aanalyse different conditions that can occur in the power system engineering practice
Apply different strategies in solving such conditions
Demonstrate understanding of the limitations related to the practical implementation of power system theory in engineering practice
