Topic description
Design methodologies for complex and ill-defined mechanical engineering problems; identifying client needs and gathering information; assessment and evaluation of engineering designs; developing design specifications; project management and documentation; teamwork, leadership and mentoring; self-reflection, creativity and innovation.
Educational aims
To develop in students an advanced and practical understanding of mechanical design, through studying and applying:

  1. Methodologies for developing solutions to complex and ill-defined mechanical engineering design problems
  2. The integration of theory and methods across the range of mechanical engineering subjects
  3. The assessment and evaluation of engineering designs
  4. Techniques for determining design specifications from clients, eg the social, political, international, economic and environmental context of a problem as well as the technical requirements
  5. Project management and documentation methods and tools in the mechanical engineering context, eg ISO9001
  6. The variety of roles in mechanical engineering design groups, eg teamwork, leadership and mentoring
  7. Creativity, innovation and self-reflection
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced and practical understanding of mechanical design
  2. Develop creative and innovative solutions to complex mechanical engineering design problems
  3. Demonstrate communication and teamwork skills appropriate for a professional engineer
  4. Use project management and documentation methods and tools
