Introduction to renewable energy sources: hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, solar thermal, photovoltaic and biomass. Systems for energy conversion and storage, eg microturbines, induction generators, fuel cells, batteries. Integration of alternative energy sources, interconnection of alternative energy sources with the grid, distributed generation. Social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of renewable energy systems.
The educational aims of the topic are:
To develop an understanding of the physical principles of operation of renewable energy systems
To study systems and equipment used in renewable energy systems
To study issues regarding distributed power generation and interconnection
To investigate the social, economic, cultural and environmental impact of renewable energy systems
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:
