This topic provides students with an understanding of the advanced concepts associated with analysis and design of modern reinforced concrete structures. Emphasis is placed on teaching advanced concepts and new technologies used in the design procedures for new or retrofitted reinforced concrete structures. Content to be covered includes: Material properties and time-dependent behaviour of concrete; Prestressed concrete beams and slabs; Composite steel and concrete structures; Composite materials used for the design and retrofit of concrete structures.
Structural Engineering includes the analysis and design of members or structures that resist applied loads. It is important for all civil engineers to understand the range of concepts, calculations and procedures used for safe design and construction of a variety of structures. This elective topic builds from content covered in Structural Engineering 1 and Structural Engineering 2, with the focus placed on advanced concepts of concrete structures including time-dependent behaviour of concrete, prestressed concrete, steel-concrete composites and FRP-concrete composites
