Topic description
The topic provides students with the opportunity to undertake VET Units of Competence relevant to design for manufacture and developing appropriate supporting technical documentation. Where alternative Units of Competence are identified as relevant to their role students may seek to undertake these as part of this topic. Such inclusions must be specified in the student’s Learning Plan and approved by the Topic Coordinator (in conjunction with the RTO).

This topic includes:

  • Develop 2D detailed drawings

  • Develop 3D CAD models

  • Develop skills to set-up and operate manufacturing platforms such as 3D Printers, plasma cutters & CNC machines

  • Identify common engineering materials and select engineering materials for a specific application

  • Develop skills and knowledge to produce detailed engineering drawings to AS 1100 standards and follow design and manufacturing processes.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge included in the following Vocational Education and Training (VET) Units of Competence:

  • MEM30031A Operate computer-aided design CAD system to produce basic drawing elements (PR)

  • MEM09002B Interpret technical drawing (PR)

  • MEM09210A Create 3D solid models using computer-aided design (CAD) system

  • MEM30007A Select Common engineering materials

  • Other Units as identified and approved as part of the student’s Learning Plan.

On completion of these units students will have the skill sets to perform the following tasks:

  • Develop the skills to create and modify a range of 3D CAD models

  • Develop the skills to create detailed CAD drawings

  • Develop an understanding of drafting standards and their application to detail drawings

  • Develop the skills to convert 2D drawings files and 3D digital models into physical parts using a range of advanced manufacturing platforms such as CNC milling machines, 3D printing machines and plasma cutters

  • Develop the skills to import 3D CAD models into CAM software to generate manufacturing data and simulate machining operations

  • Develop the skills to operate advanced manufacturing platformse a CNC milling machine to produce physical parts

  • Identify and select suitable engineering materials for a given manufacturing task

  • Develop the skills to interpret and distribute technical documentation related to an engineering task

  • Developing the skills to create and produce physical models as part of the design and manufacturing process.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Develop 2D detail drawings and 3D CAD models

  2. Use CAD data to manufacture physical parts using various advanced manufacturing platforms

  3. Select suitable engineering materials for a given manufacturing project

  4. Interpret and record appropriate technical documentation to plan and execute an engineering task
