Topic description

Through an interactive and collaborative online learning environment, students will develop an advanced understanding of curriculum design and approaches to teaching in higher education contexts. There will be a particular focus on the influence of culture and individual beliefs and practices on the learning experiences, opportunities and outcomes for students. The topic will engage participants in reflecting on factors that influence their own educational practices as a framework for developing enhanced higher education teaching and learning knowledge and practices.

Methodologies used in this topic involve student co-creation of the curriculum, portfolio work and active engaged enquiry.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Analyse teaching and learning theories and practices from global and local perspectives and their influence on student learning experiences, opportunities and outcomes
  • Explain principles of effective curriculum design and implications for teaching practices
  • Identify and apply culturally inclusive practices in designing curriculum and teaching
  • Examine approaches to and modes of topic delivery and subsequent impact on teaching and learning roles
  • Develop reflective practice skills as a foundation for enhancing curriculum design and teaching in higher education contexts
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Generate a personal theory of teaching and learning as a foundation of personal practice in higher education contexts
  2. Demonstrate a reflective and scholarly approach to curriculum design and teaching
  3. Develop high quality integrated and inclusive curriculum and teaching plans of relevance to their discipline and local higher education context
  4. Analyse, evaluate and apply learning from the international research on the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education
