EDUC9884 Studies of Asia: Arts Learning Area 1 (Sources and Contexts)

This topic assists teachers to arrive at a concept of Asian arts, whilst exploring the relevance of colonial or imperial-inspired geo-political divisions of the Asian landmass in terms of the history of arts. The topic will demonstrate to teachers the difficulties inherent in applying the traditional Western approach to Asian arts as evidence by the fact that the concept of 'history' is alien to certain Asian cultures. The topic also demonstrates that the curriculum developed by teachers can assist students to gain an understanding of the way artworks are made within different social and political groups.

The two major aims of this topic are to enable students to:

• Increase their knowledge and understanding of studies of the arts of Asia
• Apply their knowledge and understanding of studies of Asia to developing effective strategies for the teaching and learning of the arts

2. Analyse and recognise the diversity of the Arts of Asia
4. Consider the diversity of definitions, perceptions and understandings of the arts of Asia
6. Understand the spiritual impetus for the arts of Asia
8. Analyse a range of Arts forms of Asia, with reference to their sources and cultural contexts
10. Examine cross-curriculum perspectives
12. Create a rationale and curriculum content for including the arts of Asia into the arts classroom
14. Plan and apply a range of teaching and learning approaches related to infusing studies of Asia into the arts curriculum to meet the needs of all students
