Topic description
This topic involves investigation of a range of relevant contexts that impact on teaching and learning about Asia, such as the meaning of the term 'Asia' and the varying ways in which it can be interpreted, as well as the development and main characteristics of pre-modern Asian civilisations. The topic also examines relevant Society and Environment and related curriculum and resource materials and considers ways in which in-depth examinations of pre-modern Asian societies can be integrated with classroom applications appropriate to the needs of primary and secondary teachers.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • promote greater understanding of the contributions made by the peoples of Asia through investigating aspects of societies and cultures of Asia
  • consider the teaching and learning applications of such knowledge to Studies of Society and Environment and related areas
Expected learning outcomes
As a result of completing this topic, students will be able to:

  • understand particular civilisations, traditions, values and beliefs associated with the societies, ways of life and cultures of Asia
  • identify contributions of the cultures of Asia to world heritage and traditions including those of art, science, technology, philosophy and religious and spiritual beliefs
  • analyse significant episodes in the history of Asia that have had an impact on local, national and/or global developments
  • understand curriculum development issues related to infusing studies of Asia into the Society and Environment and related curriculum
  • plan and apply a range of teaching and learning approaches related to infusing studies of Asia into the Society and Environment curriculum to meet the needs of all students
  • develop and use criteria for the selection and use of resource materials to support studies of Asia into the Society and Environment and related curriculum
