Students commencing this topic should have some familiarity with strategic planning or have completed the topic EDES9609 Strategic Planning and Management or EDUC9601 Strategic Thinking and Planning.
Topic description
This topic explores the ways that knowledge is conceptualised and managed in organisations with a view to increasing organisational learning and knowledge retention. The various forms of knowledge are considered and the strategic value of those forms is investigated. The topic opens a lens on organisational life that is critical for leaders of knowledge work to understand.
Educational aims
This topic will enable students to:

  • explore the different dimensions and characteristics of knowledge within organisations

  • students will investigate different forms of organisational knowledge generation, retention and communication

  • understand how knowledge strategies affect the diffusion and harnessing of knowledge
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • explain the knowledge-based theory of organisations and different aspects of knowledge

  • construct models of knowledge retention structures, both explicit and tacit, used by organisations

  • formulate strategies to optimally utilise the knowledge in their workplace
