Topic description

Play is a window into complex human behaviours and central to a child's development, health and well-being. This topic examines the role of play in supporting social, cognitive, language, sensory and motor learning and development in young children with special needs and the use of play-based learning in early intervention models and support services.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Explore current literature and theories on play, its purposes and its influence on development, health and well-being
  • Support the development of skills and knowledge in using and assessing play to support the social, cognitive, language, sensory and motor development of young children with special needs
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify the play continuum and influences of play including context, gender, and individual characteristics of the child and play partners and the characteristics of play that nurture or inhibit childhood development
  2. Analyse the purposes and outcomes of self-initiated play and the therapeutic use of play and the optimal developmental milieu for children in early childhood settings
  3. Conduct play-based assessments to support the design of therapeutic use of play
  4. Evaluate the outcomes of play-based intervention
