Topic description
This topic is designed to develop specialised knowledge of the inter-curricula links in early childhood pedagogies. Through a focus on the design technology learning area, the topic will build on students’ broad understandings of English and mathematical knowledge, learning and teaching in multiliterate and numerate practices. Students will investigate how these numerate and mulitliterate practices are embedded in social and political contexts. Students will be expected to interpret the evolving body of research associated with the intersection between multiliteracies, numeracy and design technology and justify their pedagogical approach.
Educational aims
This topic is designed to:

  • extend student confidence, knowledge and skills in design technology learning and teaching

  • enable students to develop a play-based integrated program in multiliteracies, numeracy and design technology for children aged birth-8 years, which draws on contemporary research within transformative education.

  • enhance students' personal approach to design technology teaching, based on their critical analysis of research and practical experiences. This analysis will draw on theoretical, political, Indigenous and cultural perspectives that have culturally and historically shaped civilization’s technological endeavours.
Expected learning outcomes
It is expected that on completion of this topic students will:

  • apply a critical self-knowledge that will form the foundation for their expert judgement for socially-just outcomes.

  • justify their teaching practice in light of an evolving body of research in numeracy, multiliteracies and design technology.

  • demonstrate an advanced capacity to plan, analyse and implement a play-based approach to numeracy, multiliteracies and design technology.

  • synthesise their understandings of the relationship between play, teaching, learning and assessment (from previous topics) to generate effective play-based learning.
