Topic description

This topic focuses on historical and contemporary philosophies and perspectives that underpin current support for people with intellectual disabilities. Students will gain an understanding of current lifespan issues from intellectual disability literature including: human rights; psychosocial; health and well-being; communication; community/social inclusion; and self advocacy. Students will learn to apply their knowledge to the provision of support to enhance the quality of life of people living with an intellectual disability.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to:

  • Gain knowledge about the characteristics of intellectual disability and how to best support people with intellectual disability to have a good quality of life

  • Appraise literature on intellectual disability and evaluate issues related to diversity, health and well-being, education, transition, employment, community inclusion, and quality of life.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain what intellectual disability is

  2. Determine ways to maximise community inclusion for people with intellectual disability

  3. Evaluate best practice in communicating with, educating and supporting individuals with intellectual disability across the lifespan

  4. Critique literature on current research around key issues impacting on the lives of people with intellectual disability.
