Topic description
This topic defines the nature of brain injury and related neurological disorders. Different types of acquired brain injury are examined from a holistic point of view, with particular focus on how different forms of trauma affect the participation and learning of both children and adults. Factors which influence a persons participation and learning are identified. A community based rehabilitation and learning program is emphasised, as this is considered to be the most effective means of encouraging the skills and talents of people with brain injury. The distinct features of community based rehabilitation and intervention programs are examined, with case examples of effective inclusion and learning by people with brain injury in domestic, social, educational and vocational domains.

The aims for this topic are:

  • To teach about the distinct features of different types of brain injury; and

  • To explore the impact of different forms of trauma on children and adults

  • To examine and evaluate the factors which contribute to a persons rehabilitation, learning and relearning, and effective return to their community

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  1. Define the nature of different types of brain injury and their effects

  2. Describe recovery processes and relearning in children and adults with brain injury

  3. Achieve a basic understanding of the principal elements of neurophysiology and neuropsychology as they apply to brain injury

  4. Demonstrate understanding of disorders of memory, attention, communication, executive functioning, problem solving and psychosocial difficulties post trauma

  5. Define different therapy and intervention approaches for cognitive, behavioural and psychosocial concerns in community based rehabilitation

  6. Describe the factors which contribute to effective inclusion in family and community life
