Topic description
This topic introduces students to important areas of human learning that will provide the underpinnings of programmatic approaches to changing behaviour. Important areas covered include sensory perception, memory, an introduction to theories of reinforcement and motivation, behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, and cognitive influences on both the learning process and subsequent behaviour change, and how assessment is used to develop goals and promote positive behaviour change. The content is set within the context of working with people with disabilities and learning is related to important philosophies within the disability field.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable students to:

  • Identify and apply fundamental principles of human learning to instructional techniques and support strategies for individuals with disabilities

  • Identify and utilise meaningful assessment methods to inform the development of individualised goals and behavioural objectives.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain fundamental theories and principles of human learning

  2. Identify how the environmental, social and cognitive influences relate to the four-term contingency model in understanding why behaviour occurs

  3. Identify key formal and informal methods for assessing behaviour and explain factors relating to meaningful assessment for individuals with disabilities

  4. Develop individualised goals and behavioural objectives

  5. Apply principles of human learning to instructional techniques and behaviour support strategies.
