Topic description

This topic will examine the typical development of speech, language and communication in babies and pre-schoolers. It will also examine language and communication development during primary school years, in adolescents and adults and discuss the impact of impairments and disabilities on language and communication development. It will briefly address the strategies and interventions to develop language and communication in children.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is for students to have broad and current knowledge of the typical development of speech, communication and language in babies, children, adolescents and adults, and how a disability can affect that process.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and describe typical development of speech, language and communication in babies, children, adolescents and adults in all five domains

  2. Examine the language and communication characteristics/skills of people with disabilities using the knowledge of typical language and communication development

  3. Illustrate principles of language and communication intervention.
