Topic description
This topic introduces students to communication skills in the context of health, disability and human services. Students will learn and apply principles of effective interpersonal and interprofessional communication. They will develop skills for person centred communication and advocacy across the lifespan and for a range of diverse groups. The focus will be placed on group work, reflection, ethical communication and cultural safety.
Educational aims
This topic will:

  1. Introduce students to the principles of communication in health, disability and human services
  2. Develop foundation skills in interpersonal and interprofessional communication
  3. Highlight the importance of empathy, respect, cultural safety and ethical considerations in interpersonal and interprofessional communication
  4. Provide opportunities for students to learn and develop reflective practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply interpersonal and interprofessional communication skills for health, disability and human services using different communication techniques
  2. Practice evaluation of their own learning and performance using reflective process
  3. Display a person-centred approach and empathy
  4. Demonstrate oral presentation skills
  5. Demonstrate working collaboratively
  6. Demonstrate appropriate communication strategies for team problem solving and conflict management
  7. Describe cultural safety and ethical communication principles.
