Topic description
This topic will cover the stages of human development across the life span, from infancy to ageing. Human development will be examined from the viewpoints of physical, intellectual, social/emotional growth and change. Issues to be covered include: the interacting influence of environmental and hereditary factors upon the growing child; play and schooling; adolescence and independence; work and friendship; parenting; marriage and divorce; and healthy ageing.
Educational aims
  • To examine methods of studying individuals across the life span

  • To discuss theories of development and critically evaluate their application in explaining behaviour and learning across the life span

  • To examine physical, cognitive and psychosocial development across the life span.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply methods of observation and analysis of results in relation to developmental stages

  2. Assess theories of development, including their application across various stages of life using positive, person first language

  3. Examine physical, cognitive and psychosocial development across the lifespan, that is, from infancy, through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and ageing.
