Topic description
This topic discusses the lived experience and construction of disability using a variety of theoretical frameworks. Attitudes towards diversity and disability will be explored and examined in relation to history, legislation, human rights and service practices.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- Examine the interrelationship of social discourse, historical, legislative and human rights frameworks and the connection these have to the lived experience of disability and evolution of service provision
- Introduce and critically discuss theoretical concepts, definitions, perspectives and representation of diversity
- Encourage critical reflection on values, assumptions and biases and how this influences professional interactions and practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
- Determine key elements of perspectives and theoretical frameworks related to diversity and disability
- Distinguish and discuss the influence of theories and perspectives of disability and how they impact on lived experience of disability
- Articulate and critically reflect on personal values, biases, assumptions and learning and discuss how this applies to future practice
