To enrol in this topic, the student must have been deployed to a declared disaster as part of an Australian government team (or approved equivalent) within the past two (2) years.

Topic description

In this topic students will critically reflect on and evaluate their own practice and that of the response team following a previous deployment to a disaster setting.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Improve student's ability to critically reflect on and evaluate their own practice and that of their response teams during deployment to a disaster setting in order to improve the effectiveness of disaster responses
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and critique the cultural impacts of a deployed health care team in a disaster setting
  2. Critically reflect on their own practice when deployed in any disaster setting
  3. Discuss the management of the health and wellbeing of the team and all its members in all phases of the disaster response
  4. Analyse the role of debriefing techniques in the disaster setting
  5. Perform an internal evaluation of a disaster response from the perspective of the responding agency
