Topic description
In this topic, students will develop and apply research design and methods skills so that they will be able to undertake an independent research project. This will involve understanding the conduct of a research project from conceptualisation, research proposal, selection of appropriate research methods through to data collection and analysis. Students will develop a critical and reflective understanding of how social science research methods work in practice.
Educational aims
In this topic students will:

  1. Understand and apply the process of research design
  2. Examine, critique and apply major epistemological frameworks for understanding research methodologies
  3. Conceptualise and justify research aims and questions as the basis of their own independent research study
  4. Develop and apply a reflective understanding of appropriate research methods used for data collection
  5. Develop and apply understanding of techniques used to analyse research data, using data analysis to address research questions
  6. Develop and apply an understanding of the ethical principles relating to the conduct of social science research.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply epistemological frameworks underlying research methodologies and methods
  2. Develop and justify research aims and questions
  3. Critically evaluate, and apply appropriate research methods for data collection
  4. Analyse research data, and use data analysis to address research questions
  5. Undertake research in a way that adheres to ethical principles.
