Topic description
This topic provides a grounding in research methods for creative artists in visual art, screen production, digital media, and fashion.

Issues relating to practice-led research will be explored including the organisation and communication of creative research outcomes and the relationship between theory and practice.

Aspects involved in the construction of a creative art practice-led research project will be presented including research proposals, methodologies and methods, literature and artefact reviews, ethics and evaluation processes.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • Familiarise students with the language of research: research paradigms, models, methodologies, including those associated with art research

  • Explore and critique contemporary theories and issues in art practice and practice-led research to deepen knowledge and refine critical facility.

  • Develop student capacity to organise and manage a major research project such that connections are made between creative practice, art theories, and research methodologies.

  • To extend technical facility, hone artistic sensibilities and develop creative capacities through artistic/academic supervision.

  • Develop student abilities to communicate research processes and outcomes in creative arts in verbal and written modes.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Develop a research valid methodology applicable to their area of practice

  • Discuss and evaluate research theories

  • Identify and evaluate issues related to their own research and practice

  • Analyse current issues in their field to formulate their own research focus
