Topic description

This topic introduces advanced spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Studies in the area of spectroscopy will focus on the principles of and use of NMR, IR and mass spectrometry for chemical structure determination. Studies in electrochemistry will focus on the underlying principles, important examples of electrochemical reactions and expand to the analytical uses of electrochemistry in sensor technology. A considerable focus will be on the underlying theory of each technique along with instrumentation and sample requirements. The theory discussed in lectures is supported by a series of laboratory exercises, problem solving activities and writing exercises. Problem solving and report writing activities have been designed with an all-encompassing capstone style and will require students to relate their knowledge in this topic to a broader scope and audience.

Educational aims

This topic aims to introduce students to advanced spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Specifically, this topic aims to give students:

  • An understanding of the ways in which chemists gain information about chemical structure
  • An understanding of the principles and application of electrochemistry
  • The ability to apply spectroscopic techniques to structure determination
  • Some knowledge of the instrumental requirements of each technique
  • Hands-on training in the use of a range of spectroscopic and electrochemical instruments to analyse and/or quantify a range of substances within a guided laboratory setting
  • Further training in the preparation of written reports
  • An opportunity to work individually or as part of a team in order to investigate a range of broad reaching capstone style analytical problems
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of electrochemical principles
  2. Determine molecular structure using spectroscopic information
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the instrumental requirements of each technique
  4. Use the various separation techniques to analyse and characterise substances within a laboratory setting
  5. Prepare written reports
  6. Work individually or as part of a team in order to investigate a range of analytical problems
  7. Appreciate the relationship of spectroscopy and electrochemistry to other disciplines and natural phenomena
