Topic description
This topic provides an introduction to the use and management of information systems used by a wide range of business professionals and organisations. The topic introduces students to the role of the accountant in the planning, implementing and controlling of information systems in organisations that provide information that is relevant, timely and effective for supporting decision makers. The topic will provide the information students need to evaluate information systems and controls, including emerging technologies.
Educational aims
This topic aims to introduce students to the nature and function of Accounting Information Systems in Australia, including:

  1. The role of the Accounting Information System in helping an organisation to meet its business aims

  2. The importance of internal controls to corporate governance as it relates to Accounting Information Systems.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Identify and explain Accounting Information System elements and discuss their functions in relation to decision making

  2. Evaluate accounting information systems for specified cases

  3. Use accounting information systems to interpret and communicate issues for given cases.
