Topic description
This topic aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of the theories and concepts required to effectively manage procurement in organisations. Procurement involves sourcing, purchasing and selection of supplies to an organisation and hence is crucial for an efficient supply chain. As such the topic outlines the purchasing procedures and practices, key elements in strategic sourcing and analysis methods for effective procurement decision making.
Educational aims
This topic provides students with an introduction to the principles, practices and issues relevant to effectively manage procurement in organisations. The students will evaluate the processes and systems in place for purchasing and managing supply bases.

This topic aims to:

  • Allow students to appreciate the strategic importance of the procurement function

  • Provide students with the understanding of the purchasing policies, procedures, laws and ethics

  • Provide students with the understanding of the key elements in strategic sourcing and link to competitiveness
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Describe purchasing and supply management concepts, theories and principles

  2. Critically reflect on the procedures, techniques and elements in the purchasing and supply management process, their strategic importance for organisations and the present challenges

  3. Analyse business scenarios by applying purchasing and supply management theories and concepts and recommend solutions

  4. Work collaboratively with team members to conceptualise and synthesise information obtained from various resources to develop and present an account of knowledge in purchasing and supply management.
