Assumed knowledge
This topic assumes second year level molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics, and an understanding of the commercial, legal and social context within which biotechnology operates.
Topic description
This topic draws together the previous studies in biotechnology and acts as a bridge between formal coursework and the biotechnology workplace or an honours project. In this topic, students will identify an area of biotechnology discovery, plan and undertake a research project. They will also consider the potential future impacts of their discovery and how the knowledge gained in the laboratory can be transferred to society. During this topic, students will also broaden their networks by engaging with mentors in industry and research in preparation for their future careers.
Educational aims
The topic aims to give the students experience of functioning as beginning practitioners in the field of biotechnology. It is designed to develop graduates who can plan, implement and report on a biotechnology research project; consider the social impact of their work; work in teams and individually to complete a project on time; and engage with their profession through networking.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  • transfer and apply core scientific concepts to conduct a biotechnology research project

  • demonstrate an awareness of the impact of their work on the commercial, scientific and social environment

  • use critical analysis and problem solving skills to develop, plan and implement an innovative project

  • synthesise information and communicate effectively, succinctly and sensitively with the scientific community and co-workers

  • apply judgement and initiative to propose and prioritise work strategies in consultation with co-workers to achieve timely completion of a project

  • use self-awareness and consultation to understand their role within a group and how they can best contribute to the group

  • function as beginning practitioners in biotechnology
