BIOL3751 Marine Mammals, Birds and Reptiles

This topic examines the evolution, diversity, ecology, behaviour, anatomy, physiology, and conservation biology of marine mammals, birds and reptiles. This topic will provide an in depth understanding of the biology of marine mammals, birds and reptiles, their role in world's marine ecosystems, as well as their exploitation and protection in Australia and abroad, including indigenous knowledge and perspectives where appropriate. The scientific principles and methodologies to study these taxa will be outlined using local and international examples as well as practicals and field excursions.

This topic aims to provide students with:

• An understanding of the evolution, diversity, ecology, behaviour, anatomy, physiology, and conservation biology of marine mammals, birds and reptiles
• An understanding of the interactions between human activities in the oceans and marine mammals, birds and reptiles, and applicable conservation and management strategies
• A broad knowledge of the methods and techniques used to study these taxa
• Improved problem solving abilities and enhanced oral and written presentation skills
