This topic covers key concepts of aquatic ecology concentrating on ecological processes in marine and freshwater ecosystems. Students will learn about life histories, species interactions, seasonal dynamics and colonisation, productivity and ecosystem functions. Major ecological concepts and theories applicable to aquatic ecology will be introduced. Beyond the basic science aspects, students will gain understanding of marine and freshwater biology for impact assessments, conservation and management, and learn standard analytical methods in aquatic ecology.
This topic aims to provide students with knowledge on the underlying ecological principles and processes driving the ecology of marine and freshwater systems, and an ability to critically evaluate scientific literature on the ecology of these systems. The students will also learn various approaches for investigating marine and freshwater biology using standard field and laboratory methods.
