Topic description

The importance of leadership has become recognised as key to culture change, sustainable practice and quality outcomes for staff delivering and older people receiving health care services. In this topic, students will gain an understanding of building organisational capacity to facilitate innovation, utilising a whole of organisation approach to build and support leadership, the distinction between management and leadership, and the importance of developing a learning culture for ongoing capacity building across all levels of the organisation.

Educational aims

This topic aims to encourage a proactive approach to leadership across care contexts for older people which recognises the impact of leadership on the building of quality care environments, supporting well-being across the organisation and maximises a positive and enabling care culture.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Describe the different styles of leadership that are most effective to support culturally responsive person-centred practice
  2. Discuss the perspectives on leadership that underpin sustainable culturally responsive person-centred practices
  3. Evaluate personal leadership skills
  4. Illustrate leadership attributes and skills necessary to empower staff, support innovative team work and encourage respect and better communication
  5. Explain the roles and responsibilities for levels of leadership across an organisation providing care to older people
  6. Demonstrate the ability to contribute to the development of learning cultures to build leadership capacity in the care context
