Topic description
Elder abuse can occur in any setting, crossing cultural, gender and socio-economic boundaries. It has long been considered a social problem but over time there has been increasing attention to elder abuse and neglect in the context of public health, social services, health, legal and criminal justice. This topic examines the emergence of elder abuse in public discourse, challenges in the definition, terminology, prevalence and theoretical frameworks. Students will explore emerging trends that are shaping elder abuse policy and prevention internationally.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to introduce the concepts of elder abuse and neglect, prepare students to be aware of elder abuse and neglect in all contexts and identify ways to support older people who are experiencing abuse.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be expected to be able to:

  • Appraise the debates in relation to defining elder abuse and neglect

  • Distinguish the different forms of abuse and the signs of symptoms

  • Demonstrate an understanding of risk factors, screening and assessment processes and strategies for prevention

  • Formulate appropriate actions for reporting and responding

  • Recognise cultural and gender issues in elder abuse and neglect

  • Discuss different perspectives and policy directions on elder abuse

  • Demonstrate abilities to contribute to raising awareness of elder abuse in different settings.
