Physical activity is an essential component of healthy ageing. The positive effects of physical activity enable older people to increase and maintain their independence and well-being, thereby maximising their quality of life. This topic examines the relationship between physical activity and the physical, functional and emotional benefits in later life. Students will explore the evidence-base underpinning the current understanding of physical activity and healthy ageing, and consider how to work with older people to support and encourage physical activity as a part of daily life.
This topic aims to increase students' awareness of the role of exercise in healthy ageing. Students' knowledge in this field will be increased by examining the evidence relating to physical activity and the ageing process, with a particular emphasis on the benefits to functional and mental health. Students will develop the ability to support older adults to incorporate movement into their daily lifestyle.
