Graduate Certificate in Education (Cognitive Psychology and Educational Practice)

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification. However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

The Graduate Certificate in Education may be completed in one semester full-time, or the equivalent part-time. However as not all topics are offered in every semester some specialisations are not suited to full-time study.

Course aims

The Graduate Certificate in Education (Cognitive Psychology and Educational Practice) is professionally-oriented and is intended for people currently employed in the field of education, those who would like to be so employed, and those who have an interest in expanding their knowledge and practice with a focus on understanding and renewing teaching and learning. It aims to provide students with opportunities within the field of Cognitive Psychology and Educational Practice, to:

expand their knowledge about theory, research, practice and policy;
engage in informed, constructive debate;
engage in professional reflective practice;
adhere to ethical research standards and practices;
translate knowledge gained from reading, discussion and writing into educational practices;
foster interdisciplinary and intercultural partnerships and work collaboratively;
improve professional decision making;
contribute to the informed construction of educational policy, whether local, national or global;
further enhance their capabilities for self-regulated learning;
broaden their own personal educational pathways.

Learning outcomes

It is expected that graduates will be able within the field of Cognitive Psychology and Educational Practice to:

critically read, analyse and synthesise current theory and research;
demonstrate, through writing and discussion, knowledge of selected areas of contemporary theoretical and applied research;
relate theories and the findings from research studies to authentic teaching-learning practices;
demonstrate knowledge about research ethics;
design, conduct, and evaluate a small, directed research project;
contribute to informed debate about research, practice and policy;
generate recommendations for practice and policy;
demonstrate high standards of academic literacy.

Credit

Credit may be granted, on application, for topics completed or being undertaken towards another relevant Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters degree, or for accredited professional development.

Program of study

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Education (Cognitive Psychology and Educational Practice) specialisation, a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP, or better, in topics listed below.

EDUC9732  Teaching to Develop Motivation, Cognition and Metacognition (4.5 units)
EDUC9733  The Psychology of Learning and Instruction (4.5 units)
EDUC9734  Applications of Psychology to Learning and Instruction (4.5 units)
