Australian Computer Society (SA) Prize for Computer Science
  • The prize shall be known as the Australian Computer Society (SA) Prize for Computer Science.
  • The value of the prize shall beup to $1,000 (potentially comprising a book voucher, 1st and 2nd Year ACS membership, Young IT or Branch conference registration) or such other amount as the ACS (SA) Branch Executive Committee shall from time to time determine, on the recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the Board).
  • This prize shall be awarded by the Board to most outstanding graduate in the past year from any Flinders University undergraduate course accredited at the professional level by Australian Computer Society (SA Branch). The most outstanding graduate will be the student with the highest GPA across all topics counted towards the degree taken at Flinders University. In cases where no student has recorded a GPA above 5.5, no award will be made.
  • If, in any year, two or more candidates obtain equal highest average ranking, the prize shall be divided equally amongst such candidates.
  • These rules may be varied by the University in consultation with Australian Computer Society (SA) Branch Executive Committee from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.

Australian Institute of Physics Bragg Medal
  1. The medal may be awarded annually by the South Australian Branch of the Australian Institute of Physics and on recommendation by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  2. The award will be in the form of a medal called the Bragg Medal.
  3. The medal shall be awarded to the top final year student who is completing a Bachelor of Science degree in a physics program and who satisfies Clause 4.
  4. In the year of the award, the student shall be enrolled in at least 18 units from a final year physics program and shall attain a minimum grade of DN in all physics topics.

Chris Marlin Prize Postgraduate Student Publication Prize in Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics 
  • The value of the prize shall be $500 or such other amount as determined by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the Board).
  • This prize shall be awarded by the Board to the postgraduate higher degree research student who, in the opinion of the committee has published or had accepted the best externally refereed paper in the last academic year.
  • The students must be currently enrolled in, or must have been enrolled in the previous academic year, a postgraduate research degree within the School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics.
  • These rules may be varied by the committee from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.

Claire Corani Memorial Prize in Physics
  • The Claire Corani Prize in Physics may be awarded annually by the South Australian Women in Physics Group at the annual Claire Corani Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the Australian Institute of Physics, on the recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • To be eligible for consideration, students must be female, enrolled as full-time or part-time students, and have completed a minimum of 27 units of second year topics of which at least one third of the units must be in second year physics topics.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the best student on the basis of their performance in the second year physics topics attempted.
  • No award shall be made if in the opinion of the Board there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  • The value of the prize shall be $50.

Electric Energy Society of Australia (EESA) Prize in Electrical
  • The value of the prize shall be $500 or such other amount as the EESA shall from time to time determine.
  • This prize is to be paid for in agreement with and by the Electric Energy Society of Australia.
  • This prize will be awarded annually. If, in any year, two or more candidates obtain equal highest ranking, the prize shall be divided equally amongst such candidates.
  • This prize shall be awarded to the most outstanding Honours Project in Power Electrical Engineering. No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the Board, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

 

 

Engineers Australia (SA) Subject Prize in Mechanical Engineering
  • The value of the prize shall be $300 or such other amount as the Engineers Australia (SA) branch shall from time to time determine, on the recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the Board).
  • This prize shall be awarded by the Board to the student enrolled in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) whose performance in ENGR2781 Mechanical Design Project during the second year is judged to be the best.
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the Board, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  • These rules may be varied by the University in consultation with Engineers Australia (SA Branch). Executive committee from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.

Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) Award
  • The Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) Award shall be awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • The prize will consist of a one-year membership to the Institute and a $100 book voucher.

Forensic Science South Australia Prize for Forensic and Analytical Chemistry
  • The Forensic Science Centre South Australia in Forensic and Analytical Science shall be awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • The value of the prize shall be $200.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the top third year student who is completing the Bachelor of Science degree with a specialisation in Forensic and Analytical Science or Bachelor of Technology (Forensic and Analytical Chemistry) degree, except that in a year when there are no candidates of sufficient merit there shall be no award.
  • If two or more students are judged to be of equal merit the prize shall be shared equally between them.

  • This prize shall be awarded by the Board to the Best Performing Student in the second year of any IEEE approved course at Flinders University:
    • Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical)

    • Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics)

IET Student Prize
  • The value of the prize shall be a certificate and two years free membership which will come into effect upon graduation or such other amount as the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) shall from time to time determine, on the recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the Board).
  • This prize shall be awarded by the Board to the student enrolled in an approved IET course whose overall performance in the third year is judged to be the best. The IET approved courses are:
    • Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical)
    • Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Systems)
    • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical)
    • Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics)
    • Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics)

Malcolm Thompson Prize for Research in Organic Chemistry

Dr MJ Thompson was a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at Flinders University from 1966 to 1997. He has generously provided funds to endow a prize with the aim of encouraging excellence in research in the field of Organic Chemistry. The prize shall be awarded in accordance with the following rules:

  • The Malcolm Thompson Prize for Research in Organic Chemistry may be awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • The value of the prize shall be $500.
  • The prize shall be awarded, on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising no fewer than three members of staff in Chemistry, to a student who: is completing an Honours degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering; has undertaken an Honours research program with a strong emphasis on Organic Chemistry; and during his/her Honours program, has most clearly demonstrated innovation, originality, diligence, the ability to work independently, and an ongoing interest in research.
  • The prize will be presented at a Chemistry Honours seminar conducted early in the following calendar year.
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the Board, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  • If two or more students are judged to be of equal merit the prize shall be shared equally between them.
  • If in any year the prize is not awarded or the income from the endowment exceeds the amount of the prize, the value of such prize or excess income shall be added to the capital of the endowment fund.

Mathews Prize in Forensic Biology
  • The Mathews Prize shall be awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the Board).
  • The value of the prize shall be $500.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student achieving the highest combined result in BIOL3793 Biological Criminalistics and BIOL3792 Forensic Biology.
  • If two or more students are judged to be of equal merit the prize shall be shared equally between them.
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the Board, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
Max Clark Prizes in Science and Engineering
  1. The Max Clark Prizes in Science and Engineering shall be awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the Board).
  2. Normally, to be eligible for an award a student must: have completed the requirements for a Bachelor degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering in the academic year (including the supplementary examination period for that year) prior to the one in which they are being considered for the award; be commencing an Honours degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, either in semester 1 or semester 2 of the year in which they are being considered for the award; and have achieved an academic performance of at least a Distinction average (ie a grade point average of 6) in the 72 units of topics comprising the last two years of their Bachelor degree.
  3. Normally, the Board shall award five prizes of $500 to eligible students in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, at least one of which will be to an eligible student completing a degree offered by the School of Biological Sciences. More than five prizes may be awarded if, in the opinion of the Board, there are more than five exceptional candidates and there are sufficient funds available.
  4. The procedure for selecting the prize winners will be as follows: 
    (i) The Board will meet during the break between academic years and rank the students in order of merit, regardless of their School of origin, by whatever criteria it decides. 
    (ii) The Board shall offer prizes to the highest ranked student from the School of Biological Sciences and then to other students in rank order, regardless of their School of origin. 
    (iii) Payment of the prize will be made after confirmation that an awardee has enrolled in an Honours degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Should an awardee decide not to enrol in an Honours degree or withdraw from the degree prior to the HECS census date immediately following their enrolment the award shall be withdrawn and offered to the next appropriate nominee on the ranked list, and the process continued until all available awards have been accepted.

Richard Coultas Award for Highest Academic Achievement in First Year Biology
  1. The objective of this prize is to award, encourage and support outstanding students in the School of Biological Sciences in the pursuit of their undergraduate studies.
  2. The value of the prize shall be $250 on the recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (here after referred to as the Board).
  3. The prize shall be awarded annually by the Board to the student obtaining the highest combined marks for the topics: Evolution of Biological Diversity, and Molecular Basis of Life.
  4. Students who are enrolled in the following degrees are eligible for the award: Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Honours) - completing any major, extended major or specialisation in Biology.
  5. The offer of this prize shall be contingent upon the awardee continuing to enrol in a program offered by the School of Biological Sciences. Should an awardee decide not to accept the award (ie did not wish to enrol in further studies in the Biology area or withdraws prior to the HECS census date immediately following their enrolment) the award shall be withdrawn and offered to the next appropriate nominee on the ranked list.
  6. If, in any year, two or more candidates obtain equal highest mark, the prize shall be divided equally amongst such candidates.

Royal Australian Chemical Institute (SA Branch) Prize
  • The Royal Australian Chemical Institute (SA Branch) Prize may be awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • The value of the prize shall be $250.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the best student who has completed three years full-time equivalent (or equivalent of 108 units) of a bachelors degree in the Faculty of Science and Engineering with a major stream in Chemistry, except in a year where there are no candidates of sufficient merit there shall be no award.

Royal Society for Public Health Prize
  • The Royal Society for Public Health Prize shall be awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the Board).
  • The value of the prize shall be $500.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student who has submitted the best composition describing work experiences in the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health Practice.
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the Board, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

RS Components Final Year Engineering Project Prize
  • The value of the prize shall be $500 or such other amount as RS Components shall from time to time determine, on the recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • The prize shall be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering on the recommendation of a panel of judges attending the School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Exhibition.
  • The membership of panel will be drawn from appropriate professionals in local industry, including at least one representative from RS Components Pty Ltd and from amongst the academic staff of the School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics.
  • The prize will be awarded for quality of project management documentation; quality of design or research conducted; final outcome of the thesis; quality of 'trade stand'; and ability to answer the judges'questions.
  • The prize will normally be awarded to one student only, but in the case where the exhibit is presented by two or more students jointly, the prize will be shared equally between the students. 
  • These rules may be varied by the University in consultation with RS Components from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.

Sage Automation Prize in Robotics and Computer Systems Engineering
  • The value of the prize shall be $500 or such other amount as Sage Automation shall from time to time determine, on recommendation of the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • The prize shall be awarded by the Board to the most outstanding graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Systems) or the Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics).
  • The student with the highest GPA across all topics counted towards the degree taken at Flinders University. In cases where no student has recorded a GPA above 5.5, no award will be made.
  • These rules may be varied by the University in consultation with Sage Automation from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.

  • The prize shall be awarded by the Board to the most outstanding Honours Thesis in the Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical).

Soroptimist International Southern Districts of Adelaide Prize for High Achieving Women
  • The objective of this prize is to reward, encourage and support high achieving women in science.
  • The value of the prize shall be $1,000.
  • The prize may be awarded annually by the Board of the Faculty of Science and Engineering to the highest achieving female student who has completed: the first three years of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) - enhanced program for high achievers and is proceeding to Honours in the following year; or in the event that there are no eligible students in that degree, three years of another undergraduate degree offered by the Faculty of Science and Engineering and is proceeding to Honours in the following year.
  • If, in any year, two or more students are judged to be of equal merit, the prize shall be divided equally amongst such students.
  • Should an awardee decide not to proceed to Honours or withdraw from Honours, the award shall be withdrawn and offered to the next ranked student.
  • No award shall be made if in the opinion of the Board there is no student of sufficient merit.
