Andrew Downing Engineering Graduate Award (Engineers Australia) keyboard_arrow_up
  • Engineers Australia will provide a certificate in recognition of their achievement and 3 years of free graduate membership with Engineers Australia.
  • The prize will be awarded annually to one student.
  • Academic or other criteria for the award of the prize as per Engineers Australia guidelines.
  • The selection criteria are aligned to the Engineers Australia Stage 1 competencies with each criterion weighted equally. If all is equal, then the second criterion should take precedence. Tertiary institutions can determine the most appropriate nomination/selection process using these criteria for their institution.
  • To be eligible for the Awards nominees must:
    • Have completed a degree or diploma accredited by Engineers Australia in the relevant calendar year
    • Be a member of Engineers Australia at the time of receipt of the Award
    • Be eligible to graduate, by completing all program requirements
    • Be nominated by their tertiary institution; they may not self-nominate
  • Student engineers selected for their respective Institution Award may be from any discipline.
  • The prize is provided by Engineers Australia.

Australian Computer Society (SA) Prize for Computer Science keyboard_arrow_up
  • The prize shall be known as the Australian Computer Society (SA) Prize for Computer Science.
  • The value of the prize shall be up to $1,000 (potentially comprising a book voucher, 1st and 2nd Year ACS membership, Young IT or Branch conference registration) or such other amount as the ACS (SA) Branch Executive Committee shall from time to time determine, on the recommendation of the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).
  • This prize shall be awarded by the Board to most outstanding graduate in the past year from any Flinders University undergraduate course accredited at the professional level by Australian Computer Society (SA Branch). The most outstanding graduate will be the student with the highest GPA across all topics counted towards the degree taken at Flinders University. In cases where no student has recorded a GPA above 5.5, no award will be made.
  • If, in any year, two or more candidates obtain equal highest average ranking, the prize shall be divided equally amongst such candidates.
  • These rules may be varied by the University in consultation with Australian Computer Society (SA) Branch Executive Committee from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.

Australian Institute of Physics Bragg Medal keyboard_arrow_up
  1. The medal may be awarded annually by the South Australian Branch of the Australian Institute of Physics and on recommendation by the College of Science and Engineering.
  2. The award will be in the form of a medal called the Bragg Medal.
  3. The medal shall be awarded to the top final year student who is completing a Bachelor of Science degree in a physics program and who satisfies Clause 4.
  4. In the year of the award, the student shall be enrolled in at least 18 units from a final year physics program and shall attain a minimum grade of DN in all physics topics.

  • The value of the prize shall be $1000 or such other amount as determined by the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).

Claire Corani Memorial Prize in Physics keyboard_arrow_up
  • The Claire Corani Prize in Physics may be awarded annually by the South Australian Branch of the Australian Institute of Physics at the annual Claire Corani Memorial Lecture, on the recommendation of the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).
  • To be eligible for consideration, students must be female, enrolled as full-time or part-time students, and have completed a minimum of 27 units of second year topics of which at least one third of the units must be in second year physics topics.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the best student on the basis of their performance in the second year physics topics attempted.
  • No award shall be made if in the opinion of the College there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  • The value of the prize shall be $200.

Electric Energy Society of Australia (EESA) Prize in Electrical keyboard_arrow_up
  • The value of the prize shall be $500 or such other amount as the EESA shall from time to time determine.
  • This prize is to be paid for in agreement with and by the Electric Energy Society of Australia.
  • This prize will be awarded annually. If, in any year, two or more candidates obtain equal highest ranking, the prize shall be divided equally amongst such candidates.
  • The nominated winner should be selected on the following criteria:
    • Academic Achievement: High academic achievement in electrical engineering in areas of study directly applicable to the Electric Power Industry (EPI); and
    • Project: Best project (or thesis or similar) by an electrical engineering student with direct relevance to the Electric Power Industry (EPI).
    • The highest academic achievement and best project (thesis or similar) will be the student with the highest honours weighted average mark.
  • Preference should be given to applications where the fields of study or project are specifically directed toward the requirements of the Electric Power Industry; however, consideration should also be given to students with studies or projects which could be applicable to a wide range of industries where the student can show applicability to the Electric Power Industry.
  • The nominee for the award must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and be eligible to be a student member of Engineers Australia and EESA.
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the College of Science and Engineering there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

Forensic Science SA Prize in Forensic and Analytical Science keyboard_arrow_up
  • The Forensic Science SA Prize in Forensic and Analytical Science shall be awarded annually by the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).
  • The value of the prize shall be $200.
  • The prize shall be awarded to the student who is completing a Bachelor of Science degree with a specialisation in Forensic and Analytical Science with the highest aggregate marks in three core topics as defined below.
  • The top student will be the student who has completed three years full-time equivalent (or equivalent of 108 units) with a course GPA of 5.5 or above and the highest aggregate mark across all three of:
    • FORS2001 Forensic Criminalistics
    • FORS3003 Crime Scene Management
    • FORS3002 Evidence Evaluation
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the College, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.

IEEE Student Award for Excellence in Engineering keyboard_arrow_up
  • The value of the prize shall be $500 or such other amount as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), South Australia, shall from time to time determine, on the recommendation of the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).
  • This prize shall be awarded by the College to the Best Performing Student in the second year of any IEEE approved Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) course at Flinders University.
  • The best performing student shall be the student that has completed 72 units and has the highest GPA across the core second year level electronic and electrical engineering topics within these approved courses. 
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the College, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.  In cases where no student has recorded a GPA above 5.5, no award will be made.
  • These rules may be varied by the University in consultation with IEEE from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.

  • The value of the prize shall be a certificate and two years free membership which will come into effect upon graduation or such other amount as the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) shall from time to time determine, on the recommendation of the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).
  • This prize shall be awarded annually by the College to the student enrolled in an accredited IET course whose overall performance in the final year is judged to be the best. 
  • The best performing student shall be the student with the highest GPA across all topics counted towards the degree taken at Flinders University. In cases where no student has recorded a GPA above 5.5, no award will be made.
  • These rules may be varied by the University in consultation with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.

Malcolm Thompson Prize for Research in Organic Chemistry keyboard_arrow_up

Dr MJ Thompson was a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at Flinders University from 1966 to 1997. He has generously provided funds to endow a prize with the aim of encouraging excellence in research in the field of Organic Chemistry. The prize shall be awarded in accordance with the following rules:

  • The Malcolm Thompson Prize for Research in Organic Chemistry may be awarded annually by the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).
  • The value of the prize shall be $500.
  • The prize shall be awarded, on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising no fewer than three members of staff in Chemistry, to a student who: is completing an Honours degree in the College of Science and Engineering; has undertaken an Honours research program with a strong emphasis on Organic Chemistry; and during his/her Honours program, has most clearly demonstrated innovation, originality, diligence, the ability to work independently, and an ongoing interest in research.
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the College, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  • If two or more students are judged to be of equal merit the prize shall be shared equally between them.
  • If in any year the prize is not awarded or the income from the endowment exceeds the amount of the prize, the value of such prize or excess income shall be added to the capital of the endowment fund.

The objective of this prize is to encourage academic excellence for students studying in the field of Hydraulics and Water Engineering

The value of the prize shall be $250.

The prize will be awarded annually to the student with the highest aggregate mark in each of the topics ENGR3851 Hydraulics and Water Engineering  / ENGR8951 Hydraulics and Water Engineering GE.

In cases where no student has a recorded mark of 75 or higher, no award will be made.

The value of the prize shall be $250.

  • The objective of this prize is to reward, encourage and support high achieving women in the area of sustainability.
  • The value of the prize shall be $1000.
  • The prize may be awarded annually by the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College) to the highest achieving student who identifies as female AND has completed: 108 units of the Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science), or Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) (Honours) and has commenced, or will commence their Honours studies at the next availability.
  • The highest achieving student shall be the student who has a GPA of 6.25 or higher for their third year, and received the highest average mark for their third year core topics.
  • If, in any year, two or more students are judged to be of equal merit, the prize shall be divided equally among such students.
  • Should an awardee decide not to proceed to Honours or withdraw from Honours, the award shall be withdrawn and offered to the next ranked student.
  • No award shall be made if, in the opinion of the College, there is no student of sufficient merit.

  1. The objective of this prize is to award, encourage and support outstanding students in Biological Sciences in the pursuit of their undergraduate studies.
  2. The value of the prize shall be $250 on the recommendation of the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).
  3. The prize shall be awarded annually by the College to the student obtaining the highest combined marks for the topics: Evolution of Biological Diversity, and Molecular Basis of Life.

Max Clark Prizes in Science and Engineering - discontinued keyboard_arrow_up
  1. The Max Clark Prizes in Science and Engineering shall be awarded annually by the College of Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the College).
  2. Normally, to be eligible for an award a student must: have completed the requirements for a Bachelor degree in the College of Science and Engineering in the academic year (including the supplementary examination period for that year) prior to the one in which they are being considered for the award; be commencing an Honours degree in the College of Science and Engineering, either in semester 1 or semester 2 of the year in which they are being considered for the award; and have achieved an academic performance of at least a Distinction average (ie a grade point average of 6) in the 72 units of topics comprising the last two years of their Bachelor degree.
  3. Normally, the College shall award five prizes of $500 to eligible students in the College of Science and Engineering, at least one of which will be to an eligible student completing a degree offered by the College. More than five prizes may be awarded if, in the opinion of the College, there are more than five exceptional candidates and there are sufficient funds available.
  4. The procedure for selecting the prize winners will be as follows: 
    (i) The College will meet during the break between academic years and rank the students in order of merit, regardless of their College of origin, by whatever criteria it decides. 
    (ii) The College shall offer prizes to the highest ranked student from the College and then to other students in rank order, regardless of their School of origin. 
    (iii) Payment of the prize will be made after confirmation that an awardee has enrolled in an Honours degree in the College of Science and Engineering. Should an awardee decide not to enrol in an Honours degree or withdraw from the degree prior to the HECS census date immediately following their enrolment the award shall be withdrawn and offered to the next appropriate nominee on the ranked list, and the process continued until all available awards have been accepted.
