Student complaints and appeals

A review of a decision is the second formal stage in the University’s internal complaints and appeals processes. 

Reviewable decisions include:

  • The outcome of a complaint
  • A formal decision by a University Committee or decision-maker.   

Examples of reviewable decisions: 

  • A topic grade
  • Request a review of a grade for an assessment activity
  • A decision about an application for credit 
  • An unsatisfactory student progress decision
  • A HDR progress decision
  • A HDR examination decision

Before submitting a request for a review, you are encouraged to discuss the matter with the decision maker, who can inform you of the reasons for the decision. 

After this discussion, you can request a review of the decision by a senior officer of the University by submitting a request for a review using the Request a Review of Decision form in Service One.

Your request for review must be made within 20 University business days of being advised of the decision.

How your request for review will be managed

When you lodge a request for a review, you can expect that it will be managed by Student Policy and Integrity Services in the following way:

Acknowledgement

After you lodge a request for review, you will receive an acknowledgement from us as soon as possible on receipt. We will contact you if more information or documentation is required.

Review of a decision

Your request for a review will be sent to the relevant senior officer of the University, who will examine your case so that they can review the decision.  Student Policy and Integrity Services will send you an email confirming that your request has been sent to the reviewer.

Timeframe for review

You will be kept informed of the expected process and timeframe for completing the review, which will not exceed 15 University business days unless exceptional circumstances exist.

Notification of decision

You will be notified of the outcome of the review as soon as possible after the reviewer has made a decision.

Need support?

Student Assist at Flinders University Student Association (FUSA) provides free, independent and confidential advocacy and support to help you resolve your complaint informally, or to help you lodge a formal complaint, request for review or appeal.

The Student Equal Opportunity Advisor can provide you with advice on your options on making a complaint concerning unlawful discrimination, harassment or bullying.
