HDR Student Research Impact Prize

My course HDR HDR Student Research Impact Prize

The purpose of this prize is to recognise the quality and impact of research of exceptional Higher Degree by Research students at Flinders University.

A maximum of two prizes across the university will be made each year. The value of the prize will be $1,000.

The award recipient is acknowledged by:

  • Research impact, in terms of actual and potential adoption/translation or application by government, educational and community organisations, industry and/or business.
  • International and/or national recognition of the research undertaken during the candidature.
  • Verified demonstration of making a difference to society and culture through research.
  • Publications throughout the candidature or publication equivalents and other appropriate research outputs (for example, patents, exhibitions, performances and other creative works). Unrelated publications will not be considered.
  • Other recognition for the quality of research undertaken during the candidature (for example, prizes and awards conferred, recognition by professional organisations, invitations to prestigious conferences).

Nomination Form for HDR Students Research Impact Prize 

The Office of Graduate Research will call for nominations each year in January.

Eligibility

To be considered, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a doctoral degree awarded in the previous year
  • Be nominated by a supervisor or another suitably qualified academic staff member.
  • Receive recommendations from two external examiners that the degree should be awarded without amendments to the thesis, or with minor/major amendments (A, B, or C examination determinations).
  • Demonstrated exceptional research quality and impact of research in multiple areas.
  • Have a reference from a stakeholder external to the university who can validate the impact and quality of the graduate’s research.

 

Consideration of Criteria

  • Research impact, in terms of adoption/translation by government, educational institutions, community organizations, industry, or business.
  • International/national recognition of the research during the candidature.
  • Demonstration of making a difference to society and culture through research.
  • Publications throughout the candidature or publication equivalents and other appropriate research outputs (for example, patents, exhibitions, performances, media coverage, journalism and other creative works). Unrelated publications will not be considered.
  • Additional recognition for research quality, such as prizes, awards, invitations to prestigious conferences, or professional acknowledgments.

In addition, the graduate’s Research Impact Statement should provide a broad 300-word summary of their research and its significance. It should aim to demonstrate the following:

  • Research outputs since completing the PhD, provide ORCID ID (including publications, patents, exhibitions).
  • Attribution of the research to Flinders University and lifting the profile of the Institution.
  • Evidence of Industry engagement.
  • Actual and or potential value of the research (in monetary or non-monetary terms).

 

How to Apply

A completed application will include:

  • The Nomination form completed by supervisor or suitably qualified academic staff member received at the Office of Graduate Research by the closing date 30 January.
  • A Research Impact Statement written by the graduate (maximum 300 words). Supplementary evidence may also be provided.
  • A reference from an external stakeholder validating the impact and quality of their research.

Guidance for Research Impact Statement

Nominees are encouraged to access the Research and Employability Skills Training (REST) Program using their FAN. The Research Impact module in the Engagement and Impact section covers:

  • How to demonstrate, communicate, and provide evidence of the societal and economic value of research.

 

Selection

The selection committee will comprise voting members of the University Higher Degrees by Research Committee (UHDRC), which includes but is not limited to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research, Training & Capabilities) and Dean of Graduate Research, HDR Coordinators from each College and two HDR student representatives. The UHDRC will refer up to two nominations for the prize to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) for consideration.  Awardees will be notified in writing and invited to attend the Celebrating Success ceremony to collect their prize.
