| Badriah Mazen B Alotaibi | Professor Colin Raston & Professor Sarah Harmer | Vortex-Induced Photo-Contact Electrification Synthesis of Functional Metal Nanomaterials; | Metal nanomaterials with precise control over their shape, morphology, size, with diameter from nanometres to micrometres have gain significant interest, due to the distinct chemical and physical property. Despite the remarkable progress made in the literature, there are several limitations and challenges that must be overcome. Among the challenges are the necessity of chemicals use, long processing time, the complex processing, and scalability This dissertation focuses on creating a paradigm shift in nanoscience by using Vortex Fluidic Device (VFD) to overcome these challenges. The thesis includes 7 chapters, 2 published papers with two other submitted papers. The first publication has been featured in around 12 news around the world. The work is significant and relevant given the unprecedented method of generating pristine nanoparticles, where the size and morphology can be controlled in water and in the absence of added other chemicals and the overall processing having beneficial green chemistry metrics. |
| Nastaran Chitsaz | Professor Okke Batelaan, Professor Huade Guan & Associate Professor Margaret Shanafield | Advancing Evaporation and Runoff Simulation: Incorporating CO2 and Environmental Variables into Stomatal Conductance Utilizing Mixed Generalized Additive Models. | The increasing occurrence of floods due to anthropogenic climate change, emphasizing the role of evapotranspiration (ET) in hydrological models' accuracy. Hydrological models often rely on potential evapotranspiration (PET) due to limited observed ET data. However, estimating PET faces challenges, especially in accounting for CO2's impact on plant water use. Rising CO2 levels prompt plants to reduce transpiration, affecting runoff simulation. This response varies across biomes and species, complicating predictions. The thesis introduces the mixed generalised additive model (MGAM), a nonlinear machine learning technique, to analyse the effect of CO2 and environmental variables on plant’s stomatal conductance (gs). MGAM significantly improves gs simulation, for crops, grasses, and forests. Integrating MGAM-derived gs into the Penman-Monteith PET equation enhances runoff simulation accuracy, particularly in wet conditions. This study underscores the need to refine PET models by considering vegetation responses to environmental variables, thereby improving water balance estimation, especially under varying climatic conditions. |
| Gabrielle Genty | Associate Professor Luciana Moller, Professor Luciano Beheregaray & Dr Jonathan Sandoval-Castillo | Evolutionary genomics of Balaenopterids with a focus on the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) | Gaby’s PhD explored how baleen whales, particularly blue whales, have evolved remarkable adaptations to thrive in challenging ocean environments. By analysing DNA data, the study identified key genes that enable these whales to survive. For instance, in blue and fin whales, immune-related genes crucially support their colossal size and overall immunological health. The effects of environmental changes on whale diversity were portrayed by blue whale subspecies diverging around 300,000 years ago—a split likely influenced by shifts in global sea ice and food availability. Despite historical commercial whaling severely reducing blue whale numbers, this study found encouraging signs of potential for recovery. Low levels of inbreeding and strong genetic health suggest they have the resilience needed for long-term survival. By bridging genetics with population history, this thesis enriches our understanding of whale evolution and informs conservation, helping ensure the future of these magnificent creatures and the vital ecosystem services they provide. |
| Qi Hu | Professor Youhong Tang, Professor Jian Qin & Professor Masanobu Iwanaga | Human Serum Albumin Detection Using Aggregation Induced Emission Biosensors and Their Engineering Improvements for Screening and Monitoring Chronic Kidney Disease | Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a medical problem that threatens public health across the world. What is worrying is that symptoms are non-existent or minimal in the early stages of CKD until a significant renal function loss. Therefore, screening and monitoring early CKD becomes a crucial work in medical care by the detection of human serum albumin (HSA). Currently, Aggregation induced emission (AIE) fluorescent biosensors become a new solution for HSA detection in urine due to the advantages of simple operation, rapid response, high sensitivity, and cost efficiency. However, this technique is still subject to many challenges, including the interference of urinary impurities, light signal loss, high consumption, non-reusability, etc. In this research, two different engineering designs, hydrogel and metasurface platform, are conducted to overcome these issues. The results illustrate that the performance of HSA detection using AIE biosensors can be improved significantly via these designs. |
| Anusha Wasanthi Karandeniya Hewage | Professor Giselle Rampersad & Associate Professor Janice Jones | Effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Recruitment and Selection Process | The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has reached its pinnacle, revolutionizing diverse business functions, including the recruitment and selection process of Human Resource Management. This study evaluated AI's efficacy in expediting hiring, reducing costs, and enhancing recruitment quality and employee retention. Recruiters, hiring managers, and HR executives participated in the research. Data were gathered from 17 interviews and a survey of 215 executives. The findings indicated that AI possesses the potential to achieve these objectives, albeit with certain considerations. The findings inform that AI may not be universally applicable to all stages of recruitment, particularly in certain job categories, such as blue-collar workers. Remarkably, recruitment professionals caution against introducing AI during the interview phase. This finding emphasizes the challenges associated with implementing AI in recruitment and selection processes, paving the way for the development of a new conceptual framework to guide AI adoption in the recruitment process. |
| Benjamin Andrew Perry | Associate Professor Graziela Miot Da Silva Hesp, Professor Patrick Hesp, Professor Dano Roelvink & Bas Huisman | Modelling shoreline dynamics and management of Adelaide’s beaches at seasonal to decadal timescales | Sandy beaches around the world are under pressure from increased urban development and challenges posed by a changing climate. A common result of these pressures is coastal erosion which can pose a hazard to coastal communities and jeopardise the values of the coastal environment. This thesis develops numerical modelling techniques to better understand the climate drivers and pressures affecting sandy beaches, providing insights into the requirements of current and future coastal management strategies. The research focuses on Adelaide’s managed beaches, where coastal structures and beach nourishment have been used to mitigate coastal erosion risk. The study's findings suggest that beach nourishment will remain a critical strategy but will require adaptation to address future challenges posed by sea level rise and shifts in climate drivers affecting seasonal wave conditions. |
| Shanthy Sriskandarajah | Professor Karen Reynolds, Professor John Roddick, Professor Jodie Hobbs & Brett Ritchie | Hospital in the Home: Elastomeric Infusion Pump Performance and the Influencing Factors | Hospital in the home (HITH) refers to the provision of hospital healthcare services at the patient’s home. Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is a key therapy provided at home. This involves the administration of intravenous antimicrobials via an elastomeric infusion pump. This thesis aimed to understand the problems associated with infusion pumps used in HITH programs and the influencing factors by studying the outcomes and adverse events gleaned through performing a literature search of observational studies, analysing patients’ case notes and conducting a flow measurement clinical trial. The thesis has shown that even when pumps are operated according to manufacturer recommendations, flow rates often differ from the manufacturer-stated range leading to incomplete emptying. The pump manufacturers need to consider this when calibrating the pumps and clinicians should also be aware so that they can make informed decisions about the treatment protocol and drug delivery device employed. |
