Name Supervisors Thesis Citation
Alexandre Chan Principal Supervisor: Professor Gillian Harvey By thesis entitled: Innovative Strategies to Improve Survivorship Care Across the Cancer Continuum Cancer survivorship is defined as the health and well-being of a person with cancer from the time of diagnosis through the end of their life. However, there are many unmet needs in cancer survivorship, and clinically relevant strategies are urgently needed to optimize survivorship care. This thesis includes 6 papers published between 2016 and 2025. First, this research investigated the specific unmet needs in survivorship from various survivors of cancer and relevant stakeholders. Then, three different multidisciplinary interventions were implemented in the routine care of cancer survivors. Additionally, this research evaluated the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of university freshmen who have undergone a course designed to educate fundamental concepts of cancer survivorship. Collectively, the work within this thesis found that the implementation of innovative interventional strategies to target various cancer survivorship-unmet needs within the treatment continuum requires personalization and multidisciplinary efforts.
Dimity Charlotte Dutch Principal Supervisor: Professor Rebecca Golley Associate Supervisor: Sarah Hunter Associate Supervisor: Lucinda Barrie Adjunct Supervisor: Elizabeth Denney-Wilson By thesis entitled: Embedding children's health behaviour screening within routine primary health care as a strategy to support growth, health, and development in the early years. The first five years of life are crucial for establishing health behaviours including dietary intake, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep habits. Primary Health Care is a valued and trusted setting for monitoring and promoting child health behaviours to support health, growth, and development. This thesis proposes a universal and strengths-based approach to early intervention and health promotion by developing and testing a child health behaviour screening tool in Primary Health Care. Aligned with the Knowledge to Action Framework, this thesis demonstrates that child health behaviour screening aligns with Australian practice guidelines and is acceptable to Australian practitioners and caregivers. This thesis provides proof-of-concept evidence for the feasibility and acceptability of child health behaviour screening in Australian Primary Health Care. Further, this thesis provides clear direction to inform future research as a path towards policy and practice change to better support children’s growth, health, and development in the early years.
Monica Lawrence Principal Supervisor: Eileen Willis Associate Supervisor: Maree Meredith By thesis entitled: Cultural Safety in clinical, teaching and research practice in Australian Indigenous health. An Auto-ethnography. This PhD study is an auto-ethnography. I draw on my journal entries caring for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cardiac patients recorded over a 20-year period from 1999 to 2019 beginning with my nursing career working at a major metropolitan teaching hospital, my academic career teaching into the disciplines of nursing, midwifery and medicine, and my research experience in remote communities located in the Northern Territory and New South Wales, to theorise Cultural Safety in the workplace for health professionals, educators and researchers.
Alexandra Cate Manson Principal Supervisor: Dr Brittany Johnson Associate Supervisor: Rebecca Golley By thesis entitled: Exploring Australian parent perspectives of an acceptable school-provided meal system School is a unique setting for health promotion, where children consume over 2,000 lunches, with 80% being inadequate. Recently, there has been interest in transforming the school food system to a school-provided lunch model; however, stakeholder perspectives are not well understood. Therefore, this thesis explored the perspectives of parents, as key stakeholders, on a potential school-provided meal system in Australian primary schools. Five inter-related studies were conducted, using qualitative, quantitative, and multi-methods, finding that most Australian parents would be interested in and willing to pay for a school-provided meal system offering nutritious, affordable meal choices, underpinned by education and sustainability. Tailoring the system, including varied food offerings, costs, and food service systems, would increase equity, feasibility, and acceptability, creating a system universal in reach but not uniform in design. These findings can directly inform transformative actions in schools to support children in achieving their full potential.
Sally Vuu Principal Supervisor: Associate Professor Maayken van den Berg Associate Supervisor: Chris Barr Joint Associate Supervisor: Claire Gough Adjunct Supervisor: Maggie Killington By thesis entitled: Return to physical activity in individuals with persistent symptoms following a mild traumatic brain injury Traditionally, it was considered that “rest is best” following a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Most recently, the international consensus statement recommends undertaking light-intensity physical activity within 24-48 hours post-injury. The thesis includes five studies to assess and guide the return to physical activity in individuals with persistent symptoms following a mild TBI. Results demonstrate that the inability of an individual in reaching 90% of their age-predicted maximum heart rate due to symptom exacerbation on the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill or Bike Test indicates physiological dysfunction. The heart rate achieved at test termination can also be used to guide aerobic exercise prescription to improve persistent symptoms, and monitor physiological recovery. Post-TBI, participants on average report a reduction in physical activity levels due to persistent symptoms but there are key facilitators that support returning to physical activity. Understanding these factors enhance interventions to maximise recovery of physical activity.
Ashenafi Woyessa Principal Supervisor: Professor Paul Arbon Industry Supervisor: Mayumi Kako Associate Supervisor: Amanda Muller By thesis entitled: Exploring Health Emergency Preparedness from a System Perspective: Implications for Resource-Poor Health System Resilience This research explored health emergency preparedness in Ethiopia from a system perspective. The findings show that overall readiness remains inadequate, despite some positive system preparedness progress. Key preparedness barriers include poor coordination and collaboration, constant changes and instability within the system, resource limitations, gaps in training and education, and low adoption of recommended practices. Local adaptive mechanisms rooted in the community’s faith, culture, and social systems help enable preparedness. Additionally, exploiting global collaboration in response to escalating risks supports preparedness efforts. Interaction among the barriers and enablers resulted in developing a theory titled “Optimising health system preparedness in resource-poor settings.” This theory posits that effective health emergency preparedness depends on integrative strategies involving attitude shifts, harnessing local capacities, utilising global opportunities, and overcoming principal barriers. A key takeaway of the theory for similar resource-limited health systems is the importance of shifting attitudes from scarcity narration to prioritising a more integrated approach.
