Nicholas James Booth | Professor Kathleen Soole & David Day | Carbon and nitrogen transport across the legume symbiosome membrane | Nitrogen is one of the most limiting factors to plant growth. The application of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers can alleviate this issue, but they are expensive and can be harmful to the surrounding environment. Usually this nitrogen is obtained from the soil, but Mr Nicholas Booth focused on an alternative nitrogen source available to crop legumes, where they are able to use atmospheric nitrogen for growth. Specifically, he researched how legumes exchange photosynthetic carbon for this nitrogen source. Although this process has been biochemically understood since the 90’s, this is the first time that the two proteins facilitating this process have been identified. His work is essential in feeding the ever-growing human population, as it is the first step in improving its efficiency or introducing it into other crop species. |
Thomas Chaffre | Professor Karl Sammut & Paulo Santos | Cotutelle - Reinforcement Learning and Sim-to-Real Transfer for Adaptive Control of AUV | Sea disturbances vary unrelentingly making it necessary for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to continuously adapt their control systems to accommodate such changes. The complexity and dynamics of underwater processes are, however, difficult to be described analytically. While adaptive control systems could potentially be used to handle such changes, the field of adaptive control faces three main challenges: the dependency on the availability of a priori knowledge of the underlying processes; the need for well-defined governing equations; and the implementation of these equations on physical systems. In the context of the AUVs, these descriptions are not readily available. The objective of this thesis was to formalize a novel learning-based adaptive control using deep reinforcement learning and adaptive pole placement control. In addition, we proposed a novel experience replay mechanism that considers the characteristic of the biological replay mechanism. The methods were successfully validated in simulation and in real life. |
Emily Michelle Crawley | Professor Colin Raston & Briony Forbes | Towards improved methods of insulin production utilising vortex fluidics. | The production of insulin is of significant importance due to the growing demands for insulin through the rise of the number of diabetic patients globally. The continued research developing 100 years since the discovery of insulin in 1921 holds promise for improving the production efficiency. This thesis discusses the use of in-situ analysis of systems in the vortex fluidic device (VFD), utilised for an investigation into the fluid dynamics of the system and the response of red blood cells during VFD processing. Oxidative sulfitolysis, a process in the production of insulin, was investigated and the lysis of bacterial cells induced by the shear stress in the device represents another step in the production of insulin. Overall, the work has contributed to increasing the understanding of the fluid dynamics of the VFD and established methods for employing the VFD for the enhancement of processes in the production of insulin. |
Marcio Daniel DaSilva | Associate Professor Graziela Miot Da Silva Hesp & Patrick Hesp | Monitoring Coastal Dune Changes with Geospatial Technology | This thesis is focused on changes in the dunefields in South Australia using data from space-based and airborne remote sensing. The data analysed here is sourced from field observations collected with drones from the year 2020 through to 2022 as well as aerial imagery and space-based satellites to explore the landscape's evolution and response after major disturbances. The study sites are in dunefields on the west coast of Kangaroo Island in the years following the Black Summer bushfires and on the Younghusband Penninsula in the Coorong National Park during extreme shoreline erosion. The dynamics of these wild dunefields improves our understanding of how these landscapes evolve as a result of catastrophic fires and prolonged shoreline erosion. |
Tamar Louise Jamieson | Professor Sophie Leterme & Harriet Whiley | Impact of marine organisms on the functioning of a SWRO desalination plant. | Increasing global drought conditions are driving the need for alternate water production systems. Production of safe drinking water by seawater reverse osmosis desalination is the way of the future. Challenges to the production of cost-effective water include the need to replace the reverse osmosis membranes frequently. The thesis investigated the aspects which increase the running costs of a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant. This research shows that to drive down the system costs, the removal of the majority of unwanted substances from the seawater needs to be developed. This will allow for a low-cost water production system that is globally available to everyone. |
Carmel Margaret Maher | Professor Mike Gardner & Michael Schwarz | Transcript Annotation and Seasonal Gene Expression in Kidney Tissue of the Australian Pygmy Bluetongue Lizard, Tiliqua adelaidensis | The Australian pygmy bluetongue lizard (Tiliqua adelaidensis) is an endangered skink endemic to South Australia that survives in fragmented habitat. At risk from changing climate conditions, long term conservation of this species will rely on improved measures of species health and how well individuals can adapt to changing conditions. This thesis explores potential genetic adaptions present in Tiliqua adelaidensis, that may help it survive arid conditions. Changes in the type and abundance of RNA transcripts was compared in kidney tissue collected from the beginning and end of the summer season. Differential gene expression identified 189 significantly downregulated and 25 significantly upregulated genes during drier parts of the year. While some of these genes are known to be involved in water regulation, many were unable to be annotated using existing resources and require further investigation as more reptile genomes are sequenced. |
Soraya Rahpeima | Professor Colin Raston & Jamie Quinton | Integration of 2D materials to surfaces of electrodes | Advances in design and development of nano/micro-scale electronic components such as transistors and integrated circuits have revolutionized consumer products as in computers and smartphones. 2D Materials are central for achieving further development of the electronics industry. However, to obtain the full potential of 2D materials, they need to be connected to electrodes. Indeed, connecting 2D materials with electrodes such as silicon (Si) will advance the existing semiconductor technology. Finding the optimal method to integrate 2D materials to Si electrodes is a key factor to improve the electrical properties of semiconducting devices based on this element. |

Rebecca Carpenter-Mew | Associate Professor Tully Barnett & Robert Phiddian | Ageism and the older woman in contemporary Australian literature: the tonics and the toxins | Many of our contemporary cultural artifacts display ageist tropes and tendencies, even those that purport to be examples of positive ageing. Literature contributes to this negative presentation of ageing, particularly in the depiction of women over 50. So ingrained into the literary structure, baked into the treatment of subject matter, and embedded into language is ageism; it is absorbed yet goes unnoticed. This thesis uses as case studies six Australian novels written between 2018 and 2022. Half of these works are written by women in midlife projecting forward their fears of an older age thereby reinscribing negative depictions of older women for their receiving communities. Contrastingly, authors who write from lived experience enliven the literary treatment of older women; they agitate socially determined scripts to rewrite and refashion age for their own purposes. Such approaches have the capacity to model alternative pathways for readers as they navigate their own ageing. |
John Charles Cartledge | Professor Andrekos Varnava & Philip Payton | Aegean Islander Migration to the United Kingdom and Australia, 1815-1945: Emigration, Settlement, Community Building, and Integration | This thesis explored Greek Aegean islander migration to the English-speaking world between 1815-1945. Two case studies were the focus – islanders from Chios who migrated to London between 1815-1910; and islanders from Ikaria that migrated to South Australia between 1900-1945. This research examined how these two early migrant communities emigrated, settled, built communities, and integrated into their new nations, in a period which is often overlooked. Both communities left their homelands during turmoil (including the 1822 Chios Massacre, the Balkan Wars, and World War One), however, economic aspirations also played a role in their migrations. This work is significant, as despite originating in the same geographic region, these islanders exhibited a range of similarities and differences, including class, gender, politics, and administrations. These contrasts extended to their identities, and their reception by wider society. Both cases were explored and compared within the background of the everchanging nineteenth and twentieth centuries. |
Michael James Everett | Associate Professor Ian Moffat & Martin Polkinghorne | Stratigraphic Modelling and Chronology at the Site of Soyo, Northern Mongolia | One of the things archaeologists are concerned with is chronology. To understand the causes and effects of past human behaviour, we must know the order that things happened in time. The Neolithic period (last part of the Stone Age) in Mongolia is one area where chronology is not well understood. This thesis used geophysics to understand the sedimentary layers at Soyo and then radiocarbon dating to date those layers and, therefore, the archaeological remains that are contained in them. This thesis also proposed explanations for how, and under what environmental conditions, the site was formed. It was found that the Neolithic layers at Soyo have been partially destroyed due to natural erosion in the past. This hampers the ability of Soyo to tell us about that period of time but also provides information on how to direct future research. |
Meghan Stephanie McAllister-Hayward | Associate Professor Mike Morley & Ian Moffat | Review, Development & Application of Stable Isotope & Biomarker Geochemistry to Southeast Asian Archaeological Sites. | Research presented in this thesis utilises Geochemistry (primarily stable isotope and biomarker analysis) in archaeological contexts. There is a particular focus on the Southeast Asian archaeological cave site of Tam Pà Ling, northeast Laos. As of 2023, this site now contains the earliest fossil evidence of Homo sapiens (modern humans) in the region, backdating their arrival in the area to at least ~86,000 years ago. It is essential to better understand the diverse environmental conditions that these early humans were navigating through, to comprehend their adaptabilities that set them apart from previous species of Homo. This research primarily focuses on the preservation and analysis of lipid biomarkers (molecular fossils) in tropical cave sediments, working to develop an environmental reconstruction of the local landscape that these first humans would have encountered, and to assess if and why there are variations in the presence of biomarkers in cave sediments. |
Kay Belinda Nankervis | Chris Hay & Sarah Peters | Cultural gold/Colonial desire: First Nations stories and the non-Aboriginal theatre maker | Kay's thesis, "Cultural Gold/Colonial Desire: First Nations stories and the non-Aboriginal theatre maker", examines cultural rights issues arising when non-Aboriginal theatre makers portray Indigenous Australians in their stage stories. Kay uses critical whiteness and Bourdieu's Capital-Habitus-Field theories to categorise theatre made about First Nations people. This includes analysing exchanges of nonmaterial capital in theatre collaborations between non-Indigenous and First Nations artists. Kay concludes that white capital can become First Nations capital and help to make Aboriginal culture if it is deployed under Aboriginal control. Collaborations can be positive, she found; but they are currently a necessity not a choice for Indigenous theatre companies and artists. This is because only non-Aboriginal companies and their corporate donors have the resources to stage big theatre productions. The equation might change as Creative Australia's First Nations-led board begins operating next year with a remit to empower First Nations theatre makers with genuine autonomy. |
Cassandra Lee Schilling | Associate Professor Erin Sebo & James Kane | The Anomalousness of the Old English 'Judith': Reconsidering the Exceptionalism of Women in Early Medieval England | Women of Early medieval England are generally believed to have had limited agency. However, the Old English Judith is a poem that presents a powerful, authoritative and violent woman who is celebrated as a heroine. Scholars thus consider Judith atypical and extraordinary, because she engages in activities deemed inappropriate for women. Ms Schilling questions this interpretation. Her thesis interrogates the perceived gender norms that advance the interpretation of powerful women and female violence as exceptional. It finds that Judith’s agency has been minimised, and her authority and violence problematised by scholarship. Its findings show that Judith is exceptional, but that her specific behaviours are, in and of themselves, neither exceptional nor transgressive. The thesis points to a far less polarised and exclusionary conception of gender roles in early medieval England. |
Roksana Tarannum | Professor Udoy Saikia & Gour Dasvarma | In search of community resilience: The context of sea level rise and climate change in bangladesh | While human civilization is witnessing the impacts of anthropogenic climate change as a dangerous reality, vulnerable communities experience its severity at the highest magnitude. This is especially evident in a low-lying but densely populated country like Bangladesh where millions of coastal people live with existential crises and an evolving trend of internal displacement in recent years. This raises questions about the extent to which they are resilient to withstand climatic stresses. This research involves an assessment and analysis of the determinants of resilience of a community in southwestern coastal Bangladesh which is highly vulnerable to sea level rise and climate change. In this pursuit of resilience assessment, this research covers three major aspects of climate change, namely perception, adaptive capacity, and vulnerability; it also reveals the gaps and challenges in building community resilience and makes recommendations to guide policymakers and development practitioners in taking effective climate action. |
