Melanie Alice Heath	Associate Professor Ryan Balzan & Sarah Cohen-Woods	How sleep mediates the relationship between physical activity and mood in adolescents	This thesis tested the relationships between physical activity, sleep, and mood in adolescents. Specifically it looked at how physical activity impacts sleep and how these changes to sleep impact mood. Existing sleep hygiene guidelines for better sleep recommend avoiding exercise in the evening, this thesis found that evening physical activity had no negative impact on the sleep of adolescents. Physical activity at all times of the day was beneficial for sleep, and better sleep resulted in improved mood. Adolescents experience unique difficulties with their sleep when their circadian rhythms delay during puberty. These sleep problems often come with mood difficulties, and both can substantially impact adolescents’ lives. The connections found between physical activity, sleep, and mood in this thesis show that physical activity interventions could be used to improve sleep and emotional health in adolescents.
Jessica Danielle Howe	Dr Julie Mattiske & Nathan Weber	The role of attention control in biased attention for internal and external threats in anxiety	Anxiety is associated with biased attention to threatening stimuli and negative thoughts. This thesis investigated whether the ability to direct attention, known as attention control, could explain why some people become stuck on threat, while others avoid it. The findings across three studies indicated a complex relationship, but overall, suggested attention control may act as a double-edged sword by exacerbating avoidance and perpetuating anxiety. The research also highlighted the challenge individuals face in accurately identifying their thoughts. This emphasises the need for improved measures and procedures to enhance thought recognition and identification in both clinical and experimental contexts.
Georgina Alison Maddox	Associate Professor Ryan Balzan & Melanie Takarangi	The Effects of Drawing on Memory for Traumatic Events: Implications for Professional Practices	My thesis evaluated the effects and possible underlying mechanisms of change for arts-based interventions in the treatment of trauma, by measuring the effects of post-event drawing on both voluntary and involuntary memory (i.e., intrusions – a key diagnostic criterion of PTSD). My reviews unearthed the need for more RCTs as well as more studies using trauma-specific stimuli. My experiments indicated that there may be negative consequences to immediately drawing post-trauma. Adverse effects may occur whether participants draw the target event or something unrelated to it (i.e., comfort drawing), potentially even when the drawing occurs long after trauma exposure. Consequently, my thesis begins an important conversation in the research community on the need to build the evidence base for best practice for the use of drawing on memory following traumatic experience, both for event recall and intrusion development— a conversation with important implications for the use of arts-based interventions in professional practices.
David Patrick Nicoll	Dr Oren Griffiths & Mike Nicholls	Cueing Induced Inattentional Blindness	Augmented Reality (AR) technology is increasingly used to aid operational search with the expectation of improving people's overall performance. However, research shows that performance improves for the cued task, but other concurrent tasks can suffer. In summary, making one task easier does not guarantee benefits for another. This research investigated further using classic inattentional blindness paradigms and a video game simulating a military overwatch scenario. During three experiments, participants searched for two classes of threats, sometimes assisted by AR visual cues. Overall search performance was measured, and attention was recorded using eye-tracking and Steady-state Visually Evoked Potentials. Findings confirmed that AR technology may negatively impact performance on some tasks. Participants tunnelled their attention to reliable cues, reducing attention towards uncued threats and increasing inattentional blindness. Whereas unreliable cues likely increased visual clutter, making search more difficult. This study confirms the potential for both costs and benefits of implementing AR technology.
Yu-Tung Sun	Professor Reg Nixon & Melanie Takarangi	Meta-awareness and posttraumatic stress disorder: An investigation of the characteristics and mechanisms of meta-awareness of trauma-related intrusions	Reoccurring intrusive memories and thoughts about trauma are a key symptom of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Although the most common assessment of intrusions is via self-report, studies show that individuals can lack awareness of intrusions, known as meta-awareness failure. The research had three aims. First to understand the characteristics of aware and unaware trauma-related intrusions. Second, to examine factors that might influence the PTSD – meta-awareness relationship. Third to assess the possibility that meta-awareness could be modified. Ms Sun demonstrated the existence of meta-awareness and its failure in those with PTSD symptoms. Her work showed that maladaptive cognitive processes were associated with greater meta-awareness of trauma-related intrusions. Although a causal relationship was not found, her research has laid the groundwork for further research to understand the role of meta-awareness of intrusions and how it might be improved.
Julie Elizabeth Simpson	Associate Professor Ruth Walker & Didy Button	“I still, I still, I still, I still…” The Voice of the Older Person with advanced dementia in residential aged care: an ethnography exploring what it means for the person to have their voice	The voice of the person with advanced dementia is a significant aspect of how they live each day in residential aged care. My doctoral thesis explores how the person continues to express and enact their voice, and what features of care enable their voice. By their voice the person expresses their continuing presence and participation in the world. A survey of the lived experience of people with advanced dementia discerned they are often stigmatised and stereotyped as unable to communicate. Previous research has usually focused on the input of family and staff members. This study’s original contribution positions people with advanced dementia as central participants. The research findings show the person continues to have their voice through participation in respectful relationships and inclusive interactions, and this is meaningful to them. Recognising the person’s voice is central to excellent care and enables them to continue to live a fulfilling relational life.
