To be read in conjunction with the program of study requirements for the degree in which you are enrolled:

A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Indigenous and Australian Studies by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), three Year 2 topics (13.5 units) and three Year 3 topics (13.5 units) selected from the topics listed in the program of study below.

A student may complete a minor sequence of 18 units in Indigenous and Australian Studies by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), one Year 2 topic (4.5 units) plus an additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

The minor sequence is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Teaching (Primary) from 1 January 2020.

Aims

The Indigenous and Australian Studies major aims to:

  • equip students with a thorough grounding in contemporary issues and debates in Indigenous and Australian Studies
  • encourage students to connect across boundaries and value ethical behaviour through a cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary understanding of Indigenous cultures and Australian society
  • produce graduates with a critical understanding of the various ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders identities are formed and represented within Australia
  • produce graduates with the capacity to critically examine ideas of representation, power and privilege through key sites of knowledge production, including social and cultural institutions in Australia.

Learning outcomes

On completion of a major students will be able to:

  • analyse the contribution made by Indigenous peoples to Australian life and culture
  • explain broad understanding of Indigenous histories and cultures
  • critically consider the political, legal and cultural issues facing Indigenous people today
  • explain the application of "race" within Australia
  • critically respond to the debates and viewpoints around the issues of reconciliation
  • consider, from a broad understanding, how Indigenous peoples, both in Australia and internationally, view their history and culture.

The following is the program of study for a 36 unit major sequence in Indigenous and Australian Studies and should be read in conjunction with the course rule for the degree in which you are enrolled.

Note:  Students must complete at least 4 INDG coded topics throughout the major.
