The course is offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. It normally requires one year of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time).

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally:

  • hold an undergraduate qualification in Theology, or an equivalent degree with a significant component of theological study; and
  • have achieved a Credit (CR) or better in 13.5 units of upper level Theology topics; and
  • have completed THEO3705 Biblical Greek 2 and or THEO3707 Biblical Hebrew 2 or their equivalents if they wish to pursue the Biblical Studies stream. Applicants wishing to study the other streams do not need to meet this requirement.

Course Aims

The Bachelor of Theology (Honours) aims to:

  • enable students to extend their knowledge and skills developed through completion of the Bachelor of Theology (or equivalent degree)
  • provide students with a thorough understanding of the ethical considerations of research
  • provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to research and present an extended piece of research, both orally and in writing, in an area of systematic theology, biblical studies, church history or ministry studies.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the Bachelor of Theology (Honours), students will be able to:

  • conduct a piece of extended research in an area of systematic theology, biblical studies, church history or ministry studies
  • demonstrate an advanced understanding of theological knowledge and theory in a specific area
  • analyse and critically evaluate ideas and concepts
  • demonstrate the ability to review information and analyse results to independently sustain a reasoned, academic argument
  • demonstrate their ability to plan research activities and manage their time independently
  • demonstrate skills to present their research both orally and in writing
  • demonstrate a broad understanding of the ethical considerations of research.

Program of study

Students undertaking an Honours program need to contact the Honours Coordinator prior to enrolling in order to determine their program of study and the appointment of a thesis supervisor.

The Honours program in Theology consists of 36 units comprising an 18 unit Honours Thesis and coursework topics. Students can undertake their Honours program in any of the following streams:

  • Historical and Systematic Theology

  • Ministry Studies
