This topic is taught and assessed as a continuum. Students must enrol in all topic components in the same academic year.

On completion of 7000A and B a thesis will be submitted not exceeding 10,000 words in length. An introductory and progress seminar of 15 minutes each will have been presented and a final 45 minute presentation. A vive voce of 15 minutes will provide an opportunity for the student and examiners to clarify aspects of the thesis and presentation allowing the examiners to revise the grade upwards if appropriate. The overall grade for the combined topics will be determined by the thesis (75%) and the final presentation (25%).

Students will develop practical research skills and knowledge in a designated research area within speech pathology, audiology, linguistics, psychology, physiology or a related discipline by conducting an honours project, leading to the submission of a thesis.

This topic aims to:

Prepare graduates who will be critical consumers of research, and who will be able to design, conduct, and write up a research project themselves
Provide knowledge and skills relevant to conducting research, especially for entry to higher degree courses, and develop an advanced level of knowledge in the area of specialisation
Further develop verbal and written skills relevant to advanced studies

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Demonstrate the ability to communicate scholarly material effectively both orally and in written form
Define and apply a major research paradigm to a well formulated research question
Critique research and scholarly literature for the strengths and weaknesses in their conception, design, analysis, and presentation
Apply a rigorous research analysis to data, effectively synthesise and communicate results/findings
Effectively conduct and communicate a rigorous research process, from development of a research question through design, data collection, and analysis, to write-up and publication
Demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge in the area of specialisation
Manage contingencies, identify how they have influenced research outcomes and make recommendations for future research projects
