SCME3074 Applied Screenwriting

This topic provides students with the opportunity to identify existing stories including novels, novellas, graphic novels, stage plays, short stories, and games for adaptation to screen plays. Students will be able to identify and transform text into dramatic action with an emphasis on the development of plot, character, tone and structure, in feature films, television series, and web series.

This topic aims to:

• Introduce students to the process of adapting novels, novellas, short stories, stage plays, games, factual stories and graphic novels to the screen
• Enable students to further develop character, plot, tone and structure in screen writing
• Enable students to further develop their skills in preparing documentation for screen writing including synopsis, treatments, outlines, character breakdowns and scripts
• Provide students with opportunities to collaborate creatively and problem solve with their peers
• Enable students to use innovation and creativity in adapting existing stories to the screen

2. Write screenplay adaptations of pre-existing stories, such as novels, novellas, short stories, stage plays, games, factual stories and graphic novels to the screen
4. Develop character, plot, tone and structure for screen plays
6. Deliver documentation for screen writing including synopsis, treatments, outlines, character breakdowns and scripts
8. Work collaboratively with their peers to problem solve on creative works
10. Demonstrate innovation and creativity in adapting existing works to the screen
