This topic focusses on neurological disorders and will augment student understanding of normal movement analysis and clinical reasoning and introduce new therapeutic skills appropriate for the assessment and management of people with neurological disorders across the lifespan. Analysis of evidence-based practice of neurological physiotherapy will enable an evaluative approach to physiotherapy practice. Living with a long term neurological condition presents a diversity of symptoms and experiences, which require close collaboration between services to effectively support the patient's health as well as social and psychological needs. This topic aims to broaden the knowledge of the role of the multidisciplinary team in a range of practice settings. Students will continue to develop assessment and management skills of people with a range of neurological conditions, taking into account the psychological and social effects such disorders can have on both the individual and their carers. Students will be encouraged to consider personal factors, environmental factors and activity limitations of their patients to establish patient goals, formulate assessment, prioritise treatment and re-evaluate using appropriate outcome measures.

The aim of this topic is to establish specific knowledge and skills related to neurological rehabilitation. This topic is designed to enhance students' knowledge, skills and ability to meet the requirements of current government strategy and clinical practice guidelines in relation to rehabilitation for people with neurological pathology.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

1. Discuss neurological pathologies
2. Plan and implement an efficient, effective, culturally responsive and client-centred physiotherapy neurological assessment
3. Record and effectively communicate physiotherapy assessment findings, outcomes and decisions
4. Plan and implement safe and effective evidence based neurological physiotherapy interventions in collaboration with the client
5. Review and evaluate the continuation of physiotherapy and facilitate the client’s optimal participation in their everyday life
6. Synthesise clear, accurate, sensitive and effective communication to support the development of trust and rapport in professional relationships with the client and relevant others
7. Evaluate outcomes of management interventions by the appropriate selection of tests and standardised outcome measures used in neurological rehabilitation, including their reliability and validity
8. Consolidate the importance of interprofessional working, engage in an inclusive, collaborative, consultative, culturally responsive and client-centred model of practice in the field of neurological rehabilitation.
