Topic description
Figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King struggled against racism and oppression by non-violent protest. In this topic we will explore some historical examples of non-violent action and consider the ethical and philosophical justification of non-violent protest. We will also consider how these methods might be used in our own times and in our own lives.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • convey to students the significance of some historical examples of non-violent action

  • discuss the ethical and philosophical justifications of non-violent action

  • explore the methods of non-violent action

  • explore the circumstances in which non-violent action is most likely to succeed
