Topic description
This topic addresses the planning and development of health services and programs. Students undertake practical exercises, and participate in detailed analysis and discussion of major planning tasks in areas such as community health, the private sector, metropolitan and country regions, with special reference to current trends in business planning, contracting and partnering, strategic planning, community consultation, project management and planning methodology.
Educational aims
This topic aims to assist students to enhance their skills in the planning and development of health care services and programs and to understand the constraints planners face.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • plan a project and use project management methods

  • write business plans

  • understand the rationale for strategic plans and the constraints health care organisations face in planning and executing strategy

  • relate the planning issues they confront to the roles their organisations play in the health system
